IH-10 KATY FREEWAY RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM TO BEGIN WITH GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FEATURING ELECTED OFFICIALS, TRANSPORTATION LEADERS, CITIZEN GROUPS AND OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS

“First Phase of the $1.4 Billion Reconstruction Program to Start West of Highway 6 to Grand Parkway”

(Houston, Texas) ----- On Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 9:00a.m. CST, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will signal the beginning of the reconstruction program for the IH-10 Katy Freeway with a groundbreaking ceremony on the south lawn of the CGG Building at 16439 Park Ten Place.

Present at the groundbreaking ceremony will be representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, Texas Transportation Commission, Texas Department of Transportation, federal, state and local elected officials and a host of representatives and special guests from around the region.

The Texas Department of Transportation let the first contract in May 2003 with Williams Brothers Construction Company winning the $207 million low-bid contract. The Texas Transportation Commission recently signed and issued a letter of authorization for the commencement of construction for the project. The contractor, Williams Brothers Construction Company, already has started pre-construction activities in the corridor.

The first contract referred to by the TxDOT–Houston District as Contract B, involves the reconstruction of the existing main lanes and frontage roads of IH-10 from west of State Highway 6 to east of Grand Parkway (SH 99). Scheduled to be completed by June 2006, this portion of the new freeway will include eight main lanes, two managed lanes in the center, and six frontage road lanes for a total of sixteen lanes from State Highway 6 to the western-most project limits.

The State of Texas and the Federal Highway Administration serve as the primary source of funding for the $1.4 billion reconstruction, which includes a $250 million infusion from the Harris County Toll Road Authority for the construction of the managed lanes in the center of the freeway.

The Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program from Taylor Street in Houston to FM 1489 in Brookshire is scheduled to be let in a total of seven construction contract packages. The second and third contracts which include the section from SH 99 to the Fort-Bend County Line (Contract A) and the IH-10/IH-610 interchange (Contract F) are scheduled for letting July 1 and 2, respectively.
