GOVERNOR RICK PERRY, U.S. CONGRESSMAN JOHN CULBERSON, AND TEXAS TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER JOHN W. JOHNSON JOIN TXDOT HOUSTON DISTRICT IN CELEBRATING COMPLETION OF THE FIRST KATY FREEWAY RECONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS
(Houston, Texas) -- On Monday, June 26, 2006, starting at 10:30 a.m., the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will mark the completion of Contracts A and B of the Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program with a celebratory ribbon-cutting at the Gardens of Westgreen at 20940 Katy Freeway, Katy, TX 77449. Texas Transportation Commissioner John W. Johnson will serve as master of ceremonies with special guests Governor Rick Perry and U.S. Congressman John Culberson on program to celebrate the projects' completion.
Also present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, Texas Transportation Commission, Texas Department of Transportation, federal, state and local elected officials and a host of representatives and special guests from around the region.
Following a major investment study, an environmental impact study and final design, the beginning of the Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program was celebrated with a ground-breaking ceremony in June 2003. Three years later, as promised, TxDOT is excited to cut the ribbon on the first projects to complete. TxDOT let the first contract in May 2003 with Williams Brothers Construction Company winning the $208 million low-bid contract. This first contract, referred to as Contract B, involved the reconstruction of approximately seven miles of I-10 from west of State Highway 6 to just east of SH 99/Grand Parkway. The contractor opened the all the lanes in their final configuration on March 20, 2006 and is on target for final completion of the work by end of the month.
The second construction contract to begin on the Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program was the project referred to as Contract A, which includes approximately three miles of I-10 from just east of SH 99/Grand Parkway to the Harris-Fort Bend County Line in Katy. Balfour Beatty Construction received the contract with a low bid of $83 million. The contractor began work in September 2003 and is on target for final completion in early July 2006.
The completion of contracts A & B represent approximately 10 miles of I-10 now complete. Additionally, the residents and businesses in the west Houston and Katy areas of the corridor are already benefiting from the on-time delivery of the roadway improvements. The overpasses at SH 99, Fry, Mason and Barker Cypress were reconstructed as fully directional at-grade intersections with U-turns and four new intersections were constructed at Park Ten, Greenhouse, Westgreen and US 90. As a result, west Houston and Katy residents, businesses and commuters have the benefit of significantly improved urban intersections, better facilitation of traffic flow and improved turning movement accommodations.
Today, the reconstruction of I-10/Katy Freeway is better than 50% complete. Although, there is one major contract remaining to be let by January 2007, the major contracts required to complete the I-10 mainlanes and tollway by December 2008 are currently underway and on-schedule.
