"West Loop to Open in Final Configuration Monday Morning!"

(Houston) –This weekend, September 22-25, 2006, the Texas Department of Transportation's contractor for the I-10/I-610 Interchange reconstruction will be striping the final portion of the southbound lanes to complete the I-610/WEST LOOP mainlane reconstruction. To stripe the southbound lanes in the vicinity of the I-10/I-610 Interchange, US 290 eastbound will be totally closed Friday, September 22 from 9 PM to 9 AM. All US 290 eastbound traffic will be detoured to I-610/North Loop eastbound to I-45 southbound to access I-10 westbound. I-610/West Loop southbound at I-10/Katy Freeway will also be totally closed Friday, September 22 from 9 PM to 9 AM. I-610/West Loop southbound traffic will be detoured to I-10 eastbound to exit at Washington Avenue and make a U-turn to access the I-10 westbound direct connector ramps to I-610 southbound. Additional closures scheduled for this weekend include:

• The 18th Street entrance ramp to I-610/West Loop southbound will be closed nightly Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23 from 9 PM to 9 AM and Sunday, September 24 from 9 PM to 5 AM. Take the I-610 southbound frontage road to Hempstead Road southbound to I-10/Katy Freeway westbound to access I-610 southbound.

• The I-610/West Loop southbound direct connector ramps to I-10/Katy Freeway eastbound and westbound will be closed overnight Saturday, September 23 from 9 PM to 9 AM and Sunday, September 24 from 9 PM to 5 AM. Detour via I-610 southbound, exit at San Felipe and make a U-turn to enter I-610 northbound to access I-10 eastbound and westbound.

• One outside lane of US 290 eastbound at I-610 West Loop southbound will be closed overnight Saturday, September 23 from 9 PM to 9 AM and Sunday, September 24 from 9 PM to 5 AM.

• One inside lane of I-610/North Loop westbound to I-610/West Loop southbound will be closed Saturday, September 23 from 9 PM to 9 AM and Sunday, September 24 from 9 PM to 5 AM.

• The I-610/West Loop southbound exit ramp to Old Katy Road will be closed overnight Saturday, September 23 from 9 PM to 9 AM and Sunday, September 24 from 9 PM to 5 AM. • There will be a TOTAL closure of the intersection of MEMORIAL at I-610 from 9 PM Friday, September 22 until 5 AM, Monday, September 25. Eastbound Memorial traffic will be detoured to the southbound frontage road and directed to the U-turn at Woodway. Westbound Memorial traffic will be detoured to Woodway in Memorial Park and directed to turn right on Post Oak Lane to get back to Memorial.

• The I-610/WEST LOOP northbound frontage road will be closed between WOODWAY and MEMORIAL from 9 PM Friday, September 22 until 5 AM, Monday, September 25.

• There will be alternate lane closures at the intersection of POST OAK at I-610 from 9 PM Friday, September 22 until 5 AM, Monday, September 25.

Another major element of the contractor’s work this weekend will be the opening of the two long awaited Woodway ramps, including the new I-610 southbound exit ramp to Woodway and the I-610 northbound entrance ramp from Woodway. After the contractor completes his work this weekend, the mainlanes of the West Loop will be in their final configuration, with all the entrance and exit ramps on the northbound and southbound lanes open to traffic. Furthermore, the contractor is wrapping up the work on the West Loop approximately three months earlier than scheduled. “The progress that has been made on the West Loop is remarkable. In fact, we are pleased to report that we are almost 90 days ahead of our construction schedule,” said Gary K. Trietsch, Houston District Engineer for TxDOT. “But most of all, we are thrilled to bring drivers simplified commutes, improved access and shortened drive times.”
