Jackie Smith November 18, 2003 713.957.7437 AREA STUDENTS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, GOVERNMENT LEADERS, SCIENTIST AND PRIVATE CORPORATIONS ALL SCHEDULED TO PARTICPATE IN GIS DAY 2003 CELEBRATION "FBI-Houston Special Agent-In-Charge Richard Garcia and NASA Chief Scientist Dr. Kamlesh Lulla To Serve As Keynote Speakers" (Houston, Texas) ---- Starting Thursday, November 20th and running through Friday, November 21st, the Geographic Data Committee (GDC) will be hosting the greater Houston area's GIS Day 2003 celebration activities at the University of Houston - Downtown campus located at One Main Street starting at 9:00 a.m. GIS Day 2003 is an international event celebrating the innovative ways in which Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to provide increased efficiency and the delivery of critical services by government agencies and private corporations. It is employed to solve problems in many areas including homeland security, emergency response, environmental protection, health care, public works, zoning and land use, business site selection, and many other areas. Joining the numerous government leaders, private corporations and area students participating in GIS Day 2003 will be Richard Garcia, Federal Bureau of Investigations - Houston Division Special Agent-In-Charge who will be discussing how GIS technology is employed to assist law enforcement and homeland security initiatives. In addition to FB1 Special Agent-In-Charge Richard Garcia's participation, the GDC is honored to have secured the participation of Dr. Kamlesh Lulla, Chief Scientist for Earth Observation at the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) as a Keynote Speaker. At NASA, Dr. Lulla is responsible for directing the training of NASA Astronauts in Earth Observations and headed the recovery efforts for the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1998.
