See real-world uses of technology at 2-day conference

Houston--Celebrated world-wide, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day’s largest area event will be held at the University of Houston (UH) main campus, November 20-21, 2008 in the University Center’s 2nd floor Houston Room. The conference is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the UH Department of Geosciences, the 2-day conference is produced by members of the Houston-Galveston Area Council Geographic Data Committee.

Have you seen red/blue maps in the last week? During the recent election, GIS technology provided voter results in patterns on maps. Did you need ice after Hurricane Ike? Did you want to know when your home or office power would be restored? Before the storm did you track how Ike would affect your home or business? Then you have used GIS technology. It captures, stores, analyzes and presents data linked to an address or location.

November 20: Professional Day, Day 1
• Dr. Renu Khator, Chancellor and President, University of Houston will welcome the conference at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 20.
• Colonel James Marrs, 480th Intelligence Group commander, Langley Air Force Base, will be the keynote speaker at 9:50 a.m. Col. Marrs directs production of intelligence for three intelligence groups at eight geographically separated locations spanning three continents.
• Exhibit Hall and GIS presentations open to the public at 10:30 a.m.
