EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS DEMONSTRATE TO LANIER MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DURING PROJECT SAFESIDE'S HURRICANE SIMULATION
AT HOUSTON TRANSTAR

(Houston, Texas) ---- On Friday, October 25, 2002 starting at 9:30 a.m., the Offices of Emergency Management housed at Houston TranStar will partner with the Houston Independent School District, the Weather Channel, Time Warner Cable and the American Red Cross to present Project Safeside's hurricane simulation with area middle school students.

The Project Safeside hurricane simulation will take place in the state of the art Emergency Operations Center (EOC) housed at Houston TranStar located at 6922 Old Katy Road. Project Safeside is a nationally recognized education program that teaches middle and high school students about severe weather events such as hurricanes, floods, extreme heat and tornadoes.

This emergency preparedness program will provide area students with a firsthand opportunity to learn what it takes to prepare our local community for a real-life natural disaster. In addition to this, students acquire knowledge they can take home to share with their families so the entire community is more prepared for the next time we are faced with a weather disaster.

Participating in the hurricane simulation will be officials from the Houston Independent School District, Carolyn Jones - Sr. Brand Manager of Program Services - The Weather Channel, American Red Cross Director of Youth Programs Carmon Smith, Time Warner Cable Vice -President of Public Affairs Ray Purser, Harris County Office of Emergency Management Deputy Coordinator Frank Gutierrez, City of Houston Office of Emergency Management Deputy Coordinator Corina Love and Houston TranStar Director Jack Whaley.
