Contact: Joshua Shideler 713-881-3044 HURRICANE SEASON PREPAREDNESS: TranStar’s Flood Warning System Alerts Motorists to Flooding on Local Roadways Flash flooding from sudden, heavy rains is a familiar danger to residents in Southeast Texas. With nearly half of all flood-related fatalities occurring in vehicles, getting up-to-the-minute information on road conditions can be the difference between life and death. In preparation for the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, Houston TranStar reminds residents and travelers how to access its Roadway Flood Warning System, a tool that provides real-time flood alerts when precipitation thresholds are exceeded at area weather sensor locations. “The Roadway Flood Warning System improves motorist safety in the region by highlighting potentially flooded roadways on the TranStar map and mobile app,” said Dinah Massie, Executive Director of Houston TranStar. “This highly accurate technology warns people about flood risks, helps displaced individuals return to their homes following major storms and allows emergency crews to respond quickly and safely during heavy rainfall.” While warning travelers about freeway flooding has been a feature of TranStar’s Traffic Map for some time, widespread flooding experienced during Hurricane Harvey revealed a critical need to also monitor local roadways. Working with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, the Harris County Flood Control District and the Texas Department of Transportation, Houston TranStar overlaid Harris County rainfall sensor data with its real-time roadway information to predict areas at risk for localized street flooding.
