Freeport LNG gives to port program

FREEPORT — Freeport LNG has donated $2,000 to Port Freeport’s 10th annual Take-A-Child-Fishing tournament, which the port authority will use to purchase rods and reels for children who have none but want to participate in the event.
The tournament offers children a chance to discover fishing while collecting canned goods that will be donated to the Brazoria County Youth Home. It kicks off May 8 at Freeport Municipal Park, 420 N. Brazosport Blvd.
“We’ll have 400 to 500 kids out there on that Saturday morning, and there’s a lot that goes into putting that thing on,” Port Freeport Executive Director A.J. “Pete” Reixach said. “This kind of a donation helps defray the cost.”
Freeport LNG, which operates a liquefied natural gas receiving and regasification terminal on Quintana, got behind the event because it brings people together, Freeport LNG Vice President of Operations and Engineering Mark Mallett said.
“Some of our employees have taken their children on that event, and they have always come back and said it is a great thing to do and it gives the kids a great experience,” Mallett said.
The tournament is divided into two categories: Blue Fins, or children 3 to 8 years old, and Yellow Fins, or children 9 to 14 years old. The entry fee is one canned food item.
